Ways to Serve This Month

Help with sustainable coffee hour
As part of Foundry's commitment to sustainability and caring for God's creation, we will begin phasing in the use of ceramic/stoneware mugs and silverware instead of disposable products. We are looking for volunteers to help transport these items to the dishwasher at the end of each coffee hour. Please contact Jackie at jackie@foundryumc.org if you are interested!

The Sandwich 1000 mission is looking for additional folks to join our pool of amazing volunteers. Sandwich 1000 meets every second and fourth Wednesdays each month from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Big Kitchen at Foundry to make bologna and cheese sandwiches for Martha's Table and McKenna's Wagon. Currently we are limiting our sessions to 10 volunteers per session to maintain social distancing, and we ask that all volunteers are vaccinated and wear masks while inside the church. If you are interested in joining our email list, please send your name and email information to sandwich1000@foundryumc.org.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Early Response Team (ERT) certification training opportunities
Early Response Teams respond during the first phase of disaster relief, providing Christian presence. Train to be ready to respond and know the first steps to help. Registration fee is $55, which includes training manual. UMCOR ERT badge, T-shirt and background check fee (forms will be handed out at training).

The Baltimore-Washington Conference ERT Instructors have planned to offer five trainings spread out across the conference, at different times to help alleviate travel times for participants, in 2022.  This year we are offering the following trainings dates and locations for ERT Certifications and Re-Certification Trainings:

Aug 20 at the Mission Center in Fulton, MD
Oct 15 at Benevola UMC in Boonsboro, MD
Nov 12 at the Mission Center in Fulton, MD

The Certification course will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on those Saturday dates.

Be on the Great Day of Service team!
Believe it or not, it’s almost time to start planning the Fall GDOS. Please consider helping us plan this fun, congregation-wide event. This is a great opportunity for those who prefer to volunteer for one-time events. Email Jackie Wright at jackie@foundryumc.org if interested.

Foundry’s ID Ministry is returning to the first and third Saturdays of the month this fall! If you are interested in a very meaningful and life-changing volunteer opportunity, ID Ministry is for you. Please email idministry@foundryumc.org if you are interested.
A Project Transformation Story
As I began my second year as a volunteer for Project Transformation (minus the COVID breaks) I was reminded how much joy the activity brings me.  I'm an avid reader and believe that reading can bring a whole new world to you and open up all kinds of possibilities.

For me, helping a child to read has the potential to be a life changing activity.  All kinds of benefits are attributed to reading, such as, improving communication skills, personal outlook and broadening one’s worldview. For kids that may have limited experiences, reading becomes the avenue to exploring all kinds of things.

Project Transformation tries to assign volunteers to the same children so that you can keep a connection going.  It's great to see their faces light up when they see you again and talk about the books they are reading. The program categorizes the books according to pre-testing results so we can help them pick a book for their level. Volunteers provide assistance if they need help, and for non-readers, the volunteers read to them and try to help them with early word recognition.

I like to make voices and sounds as I read to make it an exciting, fun experience and so that the love of reading I developed as a child might be spread to others.  So, each week I make it to the southeast church location and read with a child and hopefully add another building block towards a life-long love of reading.
